Projects

Having completed my PhD research on improving base running efficiency in baseball, I am now embarking on the next phase of this work through Base Running Science—an independent, evidence-informed project focused on translating research into applied solutions for baseball performance.

My doctoral research provided the scientific foundation for investigating how athletes maintain speed while negotiating the curvilinear demands of running multiple bases. This work integrated time- and speed-based measures, spatiotemporal data, GPS tracking (VX Sport), foot-pod IMU technology (Plantiga), force-related assessments, and the application of wearable resistance training within baseball-specific contexts.

Base Running Science builds on this foundation by moving from a doctoral research project toward a long-term applied framework for baseball. The project is intended to support players, practitioners, academies, and organizations accross four interconnected areas: consultancy and advisory services, baseball-specific diagnostics, performance software and decision-support tools, and informed exercise prescription.

Consultancy & Advisory

Interpretation of performance data, program development, recommendations, collaboration with organizations, and specialist guidance related to base running.

Software

Tools for organizing, visualizing, interpreting, and longitudinally monitoring base-running performance data and supporting practitioner decision-making.

Testing

Baseball-specific evaluation of multiple-base running using time, velocity, spatiotemporal, biomechanical, and other relevant performance measures.

Training

Evidence-informed exercise prescription and baseball-specific interventions targeting identified performance limiters and the demands of curvilinear base running.

The long-term objective is to develop systematic approaches for identifying performance limiters, profiling base running performance, establishing meaningful benchmarks, and informing individualized training interventions. Through longitudinal data collection, applied diagnostics, and collaboration with baseball environments, Base Running Science aims to help shift base running development from predominantly intuition-based decision-making toward structured, measurable, and evidence-informed performance strategies.

This represents the continuation of the research rather than its conclusion: from studying base running efficiency to developing practical systems for assessing, interpreting, and improving it in applied baseball environments.
